Wil Herrington to follow Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series in 2024
Wil Herrington came tantalizingly close to winning the series championship during the Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series inaugural season. So close that not returning to the series for a second crack at the title just wouldn’t be acceptable. With a new team and a new chassis beneath him, the Hawkensville, Ga., driver announced on Thursday that he has indeed decided to give it a second shot.
Herrington finished just 14 points behind series champion Josh Putnam of Florence, Ala., and only four points behind series runner-up Joseph Joiner of Milton, Fla., helping give the fledgling series an exciting debut season. Herrington, who led the tour for much of the year last season, finished with two wins and seven top-five finishes in 19 HTF starts. Only Putnam and Joiner, with eight each, had more top-fives than Herrington and no series regular reached victory lane more than the he did.
After winning at Duck River Raceway Park in Wheel, Tenn., on July 2, Herrington earned an additional $5,000 for being the HTF Series points leader at the halfway mark of the season. He still had a chance to win the title during the last points race of the season at Swainsboro (Ga.) Raceway, but a disappointing 15th-place finish thwarted his effort.
Following a steady year chasing a regional tour in Colten Miller’s JCM Motorsports-backed Rocket Chassis, Herrington and the JCM team split after a solid three-year stint together. In December, Herrington joined South Carolina-based ASD Motorsports and the team joined forces with Barry Wright Race Cars. After mulling things over, the team and the 27-year-old Herrington decided chasing the Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series in 2024 was the best move.
Herrington has already entered eight events this year with a pair of top-five finishes at Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, Ga., to show for it. The focus now turns to the $15,000-to-win, March 16 HTF season-opener at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, Ala., where Herrington had finishes of 16th, 11th, third and 11th in four HTF races last year.
